St George’s Day Celebrations on the Rails

Date: 6th Aug 2026 Author: Scout Websites
To celebrate St George’s Day, our District marked the occasion in truly memorable style by chartering a train on the Churnet Valley Railway for a special Scout adventure.

A total of 330 Scout members, from Squirrels right through to adult volunteers, were joined by parents and siblings for a fantastic journey from Froghall Station to Ipstones. The day brought together our whole Scout family and created a brilliant atmosphere of celebration and community.

The train itself was specially decorated like a party on wheels, celebrating not only St George’s Day, but also some important Scouting milestones:

  • 5th birthday of Squirrel Scouts
  • 40th anniversary of Beaver Scouts
  • 110 years of Cub Scouts

During the journey, young people enjoyed a variety of games and activities, including a lively game of pass the parcel. One of the highlights was a fun reenactment of St George and the Dragon, bringing the story behind the day to life in a way that everyone could enjoy.

No birthday celebration would be complete without cake, and the event was rounded off with a special birthday cake, helping to mark these incredible Scouting achievements in style.

We would like to say a huge thank you to the Churnet Valley Railway for allowing us to charter the train and helping to make this unique St George’s Day celebration possible. Their support helped us create an unforgettable experience for so many young people and families.

It was a fantastic day that celebrated Scouting’s past, present, and future — and one that will be remembered for many years to come.
